Douglas Laing is a family-owned brand that was established in the year 1948 by the Glasgow-based bottler. This firm's assets include Remarkable Regional Malts: The Epicurean, Timorous Beastie, Scallywag, The Gauldrons, Rock Island, and Big Peat from Islay; it is one highly valued popular brand introduced in 2009. Over the past few years, their main focus of the business has changed from exporting various blends to bottling the single malts, especially for the United Kingdom market.
From humble starting to take over this production and distribution of small blended Scotch brand called King of Scots, Douglas Laing Whisky had what you would call the storied past. The independent blender and bottler extraordinaire company are highly responsible for some highly exciting bottlings and blends around, including Big Peat, Timorous Beastie, and Rock Oyster. Their considerably modern-day catalogue provides a wide range of single malt bottlings; this company is commonly known for the range of amazing and signature blended whiskies, mainly referred to by their Remarkable Regional Malts.
The label of Douglas Laing Big Peat features the stereotypical Ileach character, which has become a cult icon and has even got tattoos. However, it is the peat heads, smoke driven and heavy-hitting dram that has malts from many popular Islay distilleries that including Caol Ila, Ardbeg, and Bowmore. This Remarkable Regional Malts variety includes six blended malts that will represent each of six primary whisky-producing areas in Scotland: Highlands, Lowlands, Campbeltown, Speyside, Islay, and the Islands.
Most of Douglas Laing Rock Island malts and blends hail from popular maritime distilleries located on Arran, Jura, Islay, and Orkney. So naturally, it is salty, smoky, peppery, and subtly sweet. Till now, the company has featured the main 5 Remarkable Regional Malt blends in the sets over the past four years (Gauldrons being the limited edition). And the core versions have featured some special edition statement versions (such as Timorous Beasties from the "Myth Busting Blends") as well as cask strength editions—look out for them and grab them when possible.
Inspired by the long blend of Fox Terriers, Douglas Laing Scallywag is the perfect blend of aged Speyside Malts that is matured predominantly in Sherry casks. It is defined in the regulations in 2009 as a blended malt whisky that has the combination of the single malt whiskies that originate from the separate distilleries without any grain whisky. As a result, you can anticipate the explosion of dark and rich fruits, with spice and chocolate interwoven with vanilla. So, wait no more and enjoy your whiskey now with all your meals.
