Neville McNaughton and Ross McCallum opened Kapiti in 1984 as a modest cheese shop and boutique factory in the Lindale Tourism Centre on the Kapiti Coast. Each of their handmade, uniquely flavourful, and uniquely scented New Zealand original cheeses was a work of art in and of itself. Palmerston North and Paraparaumu are the company's two manufacturing facilities. Since its inception in 1984, the award-winning cheeses made by this company have been a mainstay on cheese boards around the country. The product line has grown, but the company's core values and dedication to quality have not changed.
Pasteurised cow's milk is used to make Kapiti Cheese. The texture is solid, smooth, velvety, and creamy behind its bloomy rind. The large wheels of cheese are all manufactured by hand, and it is best served when split in half—the creamy and smoky characteristics of the New Zealand cheese pair nicely with both red and white wines. A smoky version of the cheese is also available. In addition, you should try their Herb and Garlic cheese that is flavoured with bell peppers, herbs, and garlic to create an irresistibly smooth and creamy cheese with a savoury kick.
Smooth and creamy, with a hint of blue veining, the award-winning Kapiti Blue Cheese is a treat. The intense blue flavour is balanced with a salty tang that leaves you wanting more. The People's Blue cheese is manufactured by hand and has earned the New World Cheese Lovers' Choice Award five years in a row, making it a local favourite. When combined with freeze-dried pineapple, their superb blue cheese has a mouth-watering zing of acid and sweetness that is just right. Allow the cheese to come to room temperature to bring its full flavour, fragrance, and texture.
For an irresistibly creamy cheese with a dash of heat, check out their Kirimi Chilli and Garlic Triple Cream Cheese. To avoid contamination and drying out, re-wrap the item once opened in an aluminium foil.
