A staple food, staples, or just food staples refers to all those food items that are consumed regularly and in quantities that constitute a dominant part of the standard diet. They supply the major components of nutrients in a balanced diet. At any given place, staples comprise a normal set of common items that are eaten every day or as a part of every meal. They will inevitably vary between areas, regions, and countries based on the food habits and availability. Staples such as white rice, wheat, etc. are consumed in many areas as they are cheap and everyone can afford them. They also offer enough nourishment and food value. Roots, tubers, legumes, cereals, and vegetables are some examples of common staples all over the world.
Within every civilization, it is a norm to consider staples as food items that are non-perishable and thus can be stored for a longer period without the probability of decay. White rice is regarded as the top staple item in the kitchens. But during extremes of temperatures or shortage seasons some non-perishable items such as meat and fish are also considered staples. Flour, both the wheat and the plain variety is considered to be the common staple around the world. Because of its durability on the shelf and its nutritional contributions to the body, flour-based varieties of bread have become the essential base of meals.
Instant or cup noodles have become the most preferred way of grabbing a quick meal by eating it alone or cooking it with veggies and/or meat. Now, it is not just limited to children and teenagers with adults also taking a serious liking towards the product owing to its convenience of cooking. They are sold in markets in the form of a dry block and pre-cooked with a small packet containing the seasoning for the noodles. The packet can be opened and boiled for a very short time in the water before one can consume it satisfactorily. The primary ingredients in the cup noodles are wheat flour, salt, and palm oil. The seasoning is normally made of salt, sugar, and monosodium glutamate.
Dried herbs are prepared by the process of drying the fresh herbs. The drying is carried out in a calculated time to retain the original flavor of the herbs. They are usually stored for a long time on the kitchen shelf. More recent dried herbs will tend to impart more flavors to the food than the older ones. So, it is advisable to check the packaging date on the herb packet before buying it from the supermarket. Herbs are usually added to the food during the final stages of cooking. Some herbs make their way into a dish with their marinades and sauces. Thus, dried herbs can be a great way to impart flavor and nutrition to any food.
